Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is a non-invasive therapy for the treatment of mental disorders. It uses magnetic fields to stimulate nerve cells in the brain and has been proven effective in treating depression, anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and addiction. There are many TMS systems available on the market, including the Blossom TMS™ Therapy System and the Brainsway Deep TMS. While both systems are designed to treat mental disorders, they have some fundamental differences. Let’s take a closer look at the Blossom TMS vs Brainsway TMS to understand these differences.
Coil Design and Depth of Stimulation
One significant difference between the two systems is the type of coil they use. Brainsway Deep TMS utilizes the H1 coil, which allows for deeper penetration of up to 3.5 cm, covering a larger brain area. This depth of stimulation may be advantageous in treating certain mental health conditions.
The Blossom TMS™ Therapy System, on the other hand, uses a figure-8 coil that provides more precise stimulation, albeit at a shallower depth. This precision may be beneficial for targeting specific brain regions.
FDA Clearance and Treatment Protocols
Both systems have received FDA clearance for the treatment of depression. The Blossom TMS™ Therapy System is cleared for Major Depressive Disorder in adult patients who have failed to receive satisfactory improvement from prior antidepressant medication in the current episode. Brainsway has received FDA clearance for major depressive disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and smoking addiction.
Brainsway offers the FDA-cleared Theta Burst protocol, a rapid 3-minute treatment. This shorter treatment time is advantageous for patients who cannot tolerate longer sessions. The standard depression protocol for Brainsway is 20 minutes, never exceeding this duration.
Ease of Use and Interface
Another important aspect of Blossom TMS vs Brainsway TMS is ease of use and interface. The Blossom TMS™ Therapy System features a modern, user-friendly interface that requires minimal training, making it an excellent option for clinicians new to TMS or with limited experience. The system also boasts an oil-cooled, quiet operation that enhances patient comfort during treatment.
Brainsway’s interface is older and may require more training to operate effectively. However, it is still easy to use from a technician’s perspective.
Patient Comfort
Blossom TMS™ Therapy System offers a specialized medical chair with massage features to enhance patient comfort during treatment sessions. Brainsway, while not providing a massage chair, still ensures patient comfort throughout the treatment process.
