TMS vs. Spravato Therapies for Depression Treatment

Depression is a common mental health condition that affects millions of people around the world. While traditional antidepressants have been the primary treatment for depression, they are not always effective for everyone. Two newer treatments, TMS and Spravato, have emerged as potential alternatives for those who have not responded well to traditional medications. In this blog, we’ll explore the differences between TMS vs Spravato for depression treatment.

TMS (Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation)

TMS is a non-invasive treatment that uses magnetic fields to stimulate nerve cells in the brain. The magnetic field is generated by a coil that is placed on the patient’s scalp, and it targets the prefrontal cortex, the area of the brain responsible for regulating mood. The treatment typically involves several sessions per week for a period of four to six weeks.

One of the benefits of TMS is that it is a non-invasive treatment with few side effects. It also has a high success rate. Research of more than one thousand people treated with Spravato for major depressive disorder (MDD) found that 75% experienced a clinical response and roughly half experienced remission[1][2]. A different study determined the remission rate to be 36.6%[3]. Moreover, a post-marketing registry study noted that it was successful in treating obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). However, success may vary for each individual according to their condition[5]. Spravato is unique in that it can take effect within hours, whereas traditional antidepressant pills typically take two to four weeks before having any impact.

Spravato

Spravato, also known as esketamine, is a newer treatment for depression that was approved by the FDA in 2019. It is a nasal spray that is administered in a healthcare setting under the supervision of a healthcare provider. Spravato is designed for people who have not responded to traditional antidepressants and works by boosting glutamate in the brain, which helps to improve mood.

The advantage of Spravato is that it can give relief from major depression in a shorter amount of time compared to traditional antidepressants[5]. Studies have demonstrated that when those with treatment resistant depression take Spravato, they experience an improvement in their symptoms after four weeks as opposed to those who used a placebo nasal spray[3][4]. It provides immediate symptom relief and long-term advantages over other medications. Clinical trials have demonstrated that those who used Spravato noticed an improvement four weeks after beginning their treatments compared to those in the placebo group[4].

TMS vs. Spravato

While both TMS and Spravato are effective treatments for depression, they work in different ways and have different benefits. TMS targets the prefrontal cortex of the brain and is a non-invasive treatment with few side effects. It also has a high success rate, but the effects may not be permanent, and ongoing maintenance sessions may be required.

Spravato, on the other hand, works by boosting glutamate in the brain and provides rapid relief from symptoms of depression. It is generally well-tolerated and has fewer side effects than traditional antidepressants. However, it is a more expensive treatment option and can only be administered in a healthcare setting under the supervision of a healthcare provider.

Which Treatment is Right for You?

Choosing between TMS and Spravato ultimately depends on your individual needs and preferences. If you are looking for a non-invasive treatment option with a high success rate, TMS may be the right choice for you. However, if you have treatment-resistant depression or have not responded well to traditional medications, Spravato may be a better option.

I got a couple of email ads about TMS recently, which got me curious. I had no idea that this is a form of therapy that can control your intrusive thoughts. I think people struggling with depression should consider trying out this treatment before it eats them alive.
